4) Opt for a voluntary Excess - If you're fairly sure (as much as you can be) you won't need to make a claim, opt for a voluntary excess. This will ON TOP of your current compulsory excess. If you're current excess is £250 and you opt for a voluntary excess of £250, you total excess will be £500.

5) Get a good alarm fitted - Most cars come with alarms these days, but if you don't have one, get one. Make sure it's a Thatcham approved alarm and is fitted by a qualified fitter. You'll need a certificate to prove it was properly fitted in the event of a claim.

6) Be realistic - Every new driver wants a Focus RS, a Skyline or an EVO, the simple fact is, it's not going to happen (unless your Dad is Bill Gates). Start off with a smaller car and build up your no claims bonus, is there really any point paying more than the car is worth for your car insurance.

By following a few of these tips, you should be able to save some money on your young driver car insurance. Drive carefully and your no claims bonus will build up in no time.
