Young Drivers Car Insurance

You've just turned 17, you've got some driving lessons and you're eager to get your driving license and independence. However, most young drivers receive a shock when it comes to their car insurance bill.

It's an unfortunate fact, but young (especially male) drivers are most at risk from having a car accident due to inexperience. This why car insurance for young drivers is substantially more than that of their parents, the accidents they do have tend to be total write offs due to misjudging their speed.

So what can you do to reduce your young drivers car insurance?

1) Get a pass plus certificate - Many car insurance companies now see the Pass Plus course as a relevant and worthy qualification for any new driver. Some companies will accept it as a years NCB on it's own.

2) Get your own policy - Yes we know this isn't reducing your insurance bill, but in the long run you're better off building up your NCB on a smaller engined car. Some people think that by becoming a named driver on a policy, they will save money, in fact this is illegal if the policy holder doesn't ever drive the car and could invalidate the policy if you needed to make a claim.

3) Go to a specialist - There are lots of companies around that specialise in offering young drivers car insurance. They realise that not all new drivers are maniacs and offer substantial discounts to pass plus holders. Make sure you get at least 3 quotes to be sure that you're getting the best possible deal.
