Young drivers should take greater safety precautions

The government has rejected calls to introduce measures which could lead to under 21s taking greater safety precautions on the road. This has disappointed many at the ABI who have just published a report called: Young Drivers: Reducing death on the roads.

The report included a 4 point plan which included proposals to force a minimum learning period before the driving test and structured learning for all new drivers.

Labour MP Steve Ladyman said that new legislation was not the answer to the problems but suggested that there should be financial incentives for learners to have a longer learning period. Ladyman said that it was disappointing that only three insurers offered discounts for pass plus. (Insureyourmotor.com is happy to confirm that it offers substantial discounts for young drivers with pass plus who are looking for cheaper car insurance.)
