In 2001 only 30% of people used the internet to purchase goods according to Datamonitor, by 2003 this had shot up to over 50%. Relating this specifically to online car insurance, Foolproof (a user experience consultant) says that in 2006 50% of people purchase cheaper online car insurance but 66% expect to do this in the future. Their prediction is that in 10 years time, the figure will have climbed to 80%.
Insurers are delighted with this growth - Norwich Union sells 50% of its new business online as does Royal Sun Alliance. All this has been powered by the three main car insurance comparison sites - moneysupermarket.com, quotedetective.com and confused.com
The lead analyst at Datamonitor says that customers who are looking for cheapest car insurance will go to the aggregators: 'the internet is leading to a customer who is more price conscious.' The message is therefore clear - according to the experts, if you want cheaper car insurance, look no further than an aggregator like quotedetective.com.
